Shipwrecks ~ History Beneath the Waves
Yap
has several wreck sites that, although their locations are
known, very little is undertood as to the history behind
such watery fates. Ships, planes, barges and ammunitions
are scattered among the vast reef system and Beyond The
Reef has started a project to document these historical
sites.
Beginning November
17, 2003 we started conducting one-tank research dives every
Monday afternoon to these wreck sites, to document the location
through photographs, area maps and examination of the wreckage.
On occasion we have been accompanied by a researcher from
Yap's Historical Preservation Office, who will provide insight
and act as an educational guide to the current site being
studied.

Visiting divers can
join these exploration dives, assisting the research project
with data collection and photographs.
In addition to exploring
the known wrecks, Beyond The Reef will also be searching
for "yet-to-be" discovered vessels that have been
rumoured to have been lost during air and sea battles during
World War II. In the past, we have found large ship anchors
dating back to the 1800s and bombs and anti-aircraft munitions
from WWII.
Please join us on
this historical project to discover all of Yap's wrecks.
