What's New in Yap?

September 1, 2008
Here's an update of Yap's wireless internet service. The
wireless internet is up and running and speeds, although
much slower than what most visitors coming from the "modern" world
are used to, it's adequate and faster than our trusty old
dial-up service. Accounts are easy to set up and internet
time is purchased with FSM Telecom prepaid phone cards,
with a charge of 8 cents per megabyte downloaded.
As stated in an earlier "Whats New" item, we
pick up a pretty good signal at Beyond The Reef and guests
are welcome to bring their laptop and check their email
or surf the web from our shop.

Beyond The Reef has just started promoting PADI's new
eLearning program.
For those stretched too thin for time to take the Open
Water course, you can now complete the classroom sessions
through the PADI internet program. Complete the knowledge
development parts of the course at your leisure from the
comforts of your own home. Then simply come to Yap to complete
your confined and open water dives to finish your certification.
Learn at your own pace and when it's convenient for you.
You'll have access to the PADI Open Water Manual 24hrs
a day online. Beyond The Reef's dive instructors can help
answer any questions you may have with a simple email.

Yap Day!

The Yap Day holiday begins tomorrow, celebrating Yapese
customs and way of life. Both days of the festival are
filled with speeches, cultural activities, food and the
highlight, traditional dances. All of the hotels have filled
up for this annual event, and reservations for next year's
Yap Day holiday are already being taken by the hotels.
Photos above were taken by Tim Rock for the Yap Visitors'
Bureau.

Wi-Fi Now Available in Yap!
FSM Telecommunications Corp. has just installed a wireless
network for accessing the internet, so if you're heading
this way and need to stay connected to family, friends
or (I sure hope not while on vacation) work, it's now even
easier than ever. This new service can be accessed at most
of the hotels in the Colonia area and is currently free
while Telecom works out the kinks.
We pick up a pretty strong signal at Beyond The Reef,
so you can come back to the dive shop and send your dive
photos to your dive buddies while still dripping wet (hopefully
not all over our floor, though). At present, it's not very
fast.....in fact, our old dial-up standby is faster.....but
at least they're heading in the right direction and offering
services to keep pace with the rest of the world. Our sincere
thanks go out to the hard-working folks at the FSM Telecom
for making this possible.

Yap's flights return to normal schedule!
Due to the completion of the repairs to the jet fuel supply
facility at the Yap International Airport, and thus the
resumption of available jet fuel, Continental Airlines
has resumed its normal operating schedule for the island
of Yap. Effective November 1st, 2007, passengers in Guam
bound for Yap will be able to fly directly to our island,
without having to travel to Palau first. This makes visiting
Yap much more convenient and a lot less travel time. Many
thanks go out to the leaders of the Yap State Government
and to Continental Airlines for succeeding in the completion
of this daunting but necessary task.
For updated flight information, you can check the schedule here or
visit www.continental.com.
